Christchurch is the largest city of the South Island, situated in the stunning region of Canterbury. The city is ideally located, being close to beaches, rivers, wineries, and in winter, providing easy access to nearby ski fields. This city is often referred to as New Zealand’s "English City", which is due to the many gardens around the city, and the Avon river which winds through the CBD. If you have time, travel along the river on a punt, an activity unique to Christchurch, which will give you the chance to relax and enjoy a unique view of the city.

If you have a day free, try and visit nearby Akaroa, in Banks Peninsula. This is a beautiful seaside town which has a unique heritage – the street names and buildings all reflect the French settlers who were the first to arrive in the area. In addition to visiting the wineries and fantastic cafes, Akaroa is also the base for Black Cat tours, an award winning company offering swimming with dolphins and harbour cruises.

Some other activities to do whilst in Christchurch include the day trip with Rangitata Rafts, which offers some of the best white water rafting in New Zealand, and some spectacular scenery as well. For some more scenic viewing, try a hot air balloon ride – the view of the Southern Alps and the surrounding pastures is absolutely mind-blowing!

Another unique feature about Christchurch, is that it is one of the closest significant cities to Antarctica (something that is easy to believe in the middle of winter!). Some of the most famous polar explorers have stopped here on their way to the ice caps, such as Captain Robert Scott and Ernest Shackleton. This connection continues today at the International Antarctic Centre – a working Antarctic Campus located near the airport. This is home to the New Zealand, United States and Italian Antarctic programs. In the centre of this is the Antarctic Attraction, which has twice been voted the best attraction in New Zealand. The highlights of this centre include an indoor –5 degree storm, and a ride on a Hägglund, which is the same all-terrain vehicle used in Antarctica.
