Dunedin
Dunedin was founded by Scottish settlers as a ‘perfect place’, which it still remains for the hordes of tertiary students that pour in each year from around New Zealand. The name Dunedin means "Edinburgh of the South", and the early affluence gained in the nearby gold rush helped the settlers to construct buildings reminiscent of their homeland, which give the city a strong Scottish influence which is still evident today.
Dunedin is home to some unique architecture, such as New Zealand’s only castle – built by one of the area’s early politicians.
The nearby peninsula is home to some of the most incredible wildlife that you will see whilst in New Zealand. The Elm wildlife tour will take you up close some of the world’s rarest penguins, New Zealand Sea Lions, as well as the only mainland breeding colony of Royal Albatross in the world.
This student city is also well known as "The Beer and Chocolate Capital of New Zealand" – with both the Cadbury Factory and Speight’s brewery based in the town. Each of these place offers tours, which a well worth a visit, both for the information shared, and the samples which are given out along the way!
