Kaikoura
According to Maori mythology, Kaikoura is the point from where Maui fished up the North Island from the sea. The name "Kaikoura" in Maori means "meal of crayfish", which is one of the many examples of the plentiful sealife in the area.
The picturesque little town, situated where the Southern Alps meet the coast, is one of the only places in the world that is near a deep-sea trench, which, when combined with all of the food sources in the water, means it is a prime location to be able to view whales and dolphins just a few kilometres out from shore. One of the highlights when visiting Kaikoura is the chance to swim with Dusky Dolphins, one of the world’s most playful and acrobatic dolphin species.
The town of Kaikoura is strongly aware of the importance of the natural environment, and is very proactive in its protection. One of these methods is to become Green Globe Accredited, which is an environmental certification system. Another way to help the environment while you are in Kaikoura is by taking part in "trees for travellers", where you can choose, and then sponsor a native tree that will be planted in your name.
