Milford Sound
No visit to Queenstown would be complete without taking the day trip to Milford Sound. This is one of the most spectacular journeys that you will take either in New Zealand, or in fact anywhere in the world. One of the best things about this trip is that it is amazing in any weather – in fact, the more rain, the more amazing the waterfalls are!
The road itself is a highlight of the journey, as you are able to see incredible geological features, native wildlife, and untouched wilderness. Travel along Lake Wakatipu; pass by lush farmland to Te Anau, known as "The Walking Capital of New Zealand" due to its proximity to such famous walking tracks like the Routeburn and the Milford. After leaving Te Anau, drive along the incredible Milford Road, which passes by amazing geological features, untouched wilderness, and native wildlife. Hear about the amazing feat of construction that is the Homer tunnel, before arriving in Milford Sound and joining a cruise, which takes you deep into the Fjord and out to the open sea, before returning to Milford, arriving in Queenstown in the early evening.
