Nelson is often referred to "the sunshine capital" as it officially receives the most hours of sunshine of anywhere in New Zealand! The area’s climate – with long summers and mild winters – provide an bountiful harvest of high quality fruit each year – with apples and berries grown all around the region, which is an excellent source of seasonal work for travellers if you’re interested!

Nelson is a thriving city set between the Southern Alps and golden sandy beaches of Abel Tasman National Park. The population of artists that have settled in the area give the city a relaxed environment. Their influence can be felt throughout the town, both at the weekly markets in the central city, and also at the fascinating Wearable Arts museum, which houses some of the entrants from the annual competition. There are also some really good cafes around the city, and the diverse range of pubs; restaurants and clubs make after dark a great time of day!

If you are not in the mood to relax, take a journey out to nearby Happy Valley. Not only does this give you the chance to ride 4 x 4 motorbikes through native bush and up mountains, but you can also scare yourself by speeding 1.6 km at speeds of over 100 kph over native bush and amazing views on the world’s first skywire.

Another fantastic activity that the Nelson region offers is some of New Zealand’s best hiking trips. There are two large national parks close by, the first being Nelson Lakes. This is best accessed from the town of St Arnaud, and many different walks are available, suitable for all ages and capabilities. The network of tracks offers walks along lake edges, through glacial features and tranquil beech forests. Secondly, the Abel Tasman National Park, to the north of the city, provides walks in the region ranging from a few hours, to 4 – 5 days. The Department of Conservation manages the huts around the track, and if you wish to use them, it is essential that you book them prior to leaving Auckland, Wellington or Nelson.
